Swainsboro’s up and down season continued last week with a convincing win over Dublin on the road and a loss to Treutlen County at home.
On Tuesday, September 29, Swainsboro traveled to Dublin to face the (9-15) Lady Irish. Early in the game, Swainsboro missed out on a couple of opportunities to fully capitalize on multiple Dublin errors, but they still led by a 4-2 margin after five innings of play. In the top of the sixth inning, the Lady Tigers’ bats finally came to life as they were able to turn four singles, a sacrifice bunt, a double, and a triple into six runs in the inning and finally take control of the game. After the big offensive inning, the teams would add on one run each before Swainsboro eventually was able to bring home the 11-3 win. Leading the Swainsboro offense were catcher Sara Smith (2-4, BB, RBI) and first baseman Lily Hudson (2-5, RBI). Six other Lady Tigers also chipped in with a hit in the game and Anna Grace Scarborough went the distance in the circle for Swainsboro allowing three runs (2 earned) on just four hits.
On Wednesday, Swainsboro returned home to host the (13-10) Treutlen County Vikings. The Lady Tigers’ lineup included their fourth different starting pitcher of the season. Junior Sara Smith traded in her catcher’s mitt and toed the rubber for her first start in the circle in her varsity career. Smith pitched well but the Lady Tiger defense did not have one of their better games and the Lady Tiger offense also struggled to keep up with the visiting Vikings in the 11-3 loss. The leading hitter for Swainsboro was catcher Jennifer Hernandez who was 2-3 on the evening.
Monday’s region game at home against Dodge County was rained out and has been rescheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday as part of a split double header. GHSA now uses the Post Season Rankings (PSR) to seed the 32-team playoff brackets for all classifications. In order to complete the playoff brackets this week, all regular season games, including make-up games, must be completed by Thursday. Swainsboro’s remaining schedule will now be as follows: Tuesday, October 6, at Bleckley County 5:30 p.m.; Wednesday, October 7, at GSIC 5:30 p.m.; Thursday, October 8, at home against Dodge County at 1 p.m. and later that same day, a road trip to Tattnall County for the final game of the regular season at 6 p.m.
