The Seedling Garden Club held its October meeting Monday, October 12, in the social hall of the Swainsboro First Methodist Church, with sixteen members present. A special former member, Sandra Thompson, was welcomed as a visitor with former member, Terri Smith, rejoining the club. We always welcome former members.
President Kay Peacock welcomed everyone and presided over the meeting. Paula Karrh opened the meeting with an inspiring inspiration prayer titled, "The Garden."
In the business session: Secretary Cheryl Goodman presented the minutes of the previous meeting with treasurer Wanda Ellis presenting the treasurer's report. Both were approved as presented. Yonna Bailey announced that Paulette and Henry Terwilliger’s yard was awarded October Yard of the Month. Paula Karrh shared a variety of horticulture tips for the month of October. These are always important to help with the correct things to plant and things to prune etc. for the month.
Old Business:
Nancy Lisenby reported that the flowerpots at Emanuel County Nursing Home have been planted. Also, the vegetable gardens have been planted with fall plants and seeds. Margo Riner reported that the farm wagon on the square was decorated for fall and plans are being made to decorate for Christmas. This is a new project for the club. We appreciate the help from The Chamber and Melissa Kirby with this project. Martha Cobb, District Director, reported on the Oleander District Annual Meeting to be held in Swainsboro on October 21. Ten clubs, including Seedling Garden Club and Glad Garden Club, will be hosting this meeting. The theme for this event is "Blue Jeans, Boots and BBQ" celebration. Guest speaker for this event will be Suzanne Finger, a landscape architect.
Jana Sasser from Reedy Creek Nurseries in Metter was introduced by Lucille Braswell as program speaker for the meeting. She gave a very interesting background of how she got started in the horticulture field. Jana lived in California then moved back to Metter after being gifted five acres of land. She displayed several unusual plants that she has in the nursery. These are not found in other nurseries. Her favorite supplier is Monrovia. Jana has two flower fields of flowers that you can come pick and keep. She stated she has planted 1000 daffodils among her crab apple trees. Jana also does landscape design work. Jana stated, "I started in "Horticulture Soft Ware Consultant" and this adventure has been a learning experience for her and very rewarding."
Using a Fall theme, hostesses served pimento cheese sandwiches, snack platter of ham, cheese and crackers, mixed fruit, and a variety of sweets and soda. Adding a Halloween whimsical touch, a "Trick or Treat" bowl held a variety of candy bars to be picked up by members and guest. The serving table was beautifully adorned with lighted fall leaves garland. Large plants were placed in center of table. These were graciously left from Swainsboro Methodist Women's luncheon the day before. We appreciate their willingness to leave these to help decorate the serving table. Hostesses for the meeting were Yonna Bailey, Linda Dekle and Cheryl Goodman. We were saddened that Linda was in hospital and could not attend.
Meeting was adjourned with Terri Smith winning the raffle drawing.
The November meeting will be the annual auction to be held on November 9. Any one is invited to join us for this fun meeting at Swainsboro First Methodist Church at 5:30 p.m.
