The Swainsboro Middle School boys’ basketball team enters the postseason undefeated and ready for the next challenge as playoff action tips off Tuesday.
SMS will compete in the semifinal round Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Swainsboro Middle School against Dodge County, with a spot in Thursday’s championship game on the line. If the Tigers advance, the title game will be played Thursday at The Den at Swainsboro High School against either Bleckley County or Dublin.
According to head coach Liam Cushman, leadership has been a major factor in the team’s success this season, particularly from the eighth-grade group. Those players have consistently set the tone in practice and during games, encouraging teammates after mistakes, guiding younger players through plays and drills, and leading by example on and off the court.
As the season has progressed, the team’s focus has continued to sharpen. Film sessions, practices, and coaching instruction are taken seriously by the entire roster. Cushman noted that while the talent was always there, the work ethic has grown to match it, allowing the group to fully buy into being great.
The coaching staff has emphasized staying humble and embracing challenges. Despite being one of the most talented middle school teams in Georgia, accountability and discipline remain the standard. Players are holding each other to expectations, and everyone is committed to the team’s goals.
Practice this week has focused on details, with an emphasis on timing and execution as the Tigers prepare for postseason play.
With both the boys and girls middle school teams enjoying undefeated seasons, Swainsboro Middle School basketball continues to build a strong foundation for the future. Now, the focus turns to Tuesday evening as SMS looks to take the next step in its playoff run.
