Tigers take down Vidalia, turn focus to Savannah Christian

Last Friday night, the Swainsboro Tigers (7–1) hosted the Vidalia Indians (1–6) in a crucial region battle at Tiger Field. With this being the Tigers’ final regular-season home game, the energy was high, and the crowd got exactly what they came for: a 35–20 victory that sent Tiger Nation home smiling.

The Tigers started the night on defense, facing a Vidalia team determined to establish its Wing-T offense. Swainsboro’s defense, however, stood its ground and forced an early punt. Once the Tigers took over on offense, they wasted no time showing off their balance. Quarterback Joshua Gray connected with receivers Shannon Benjamin, Marco Danford, and Daveyhon Williams to move the chains. Danford then capped the drive himself with a run into the end zone for the first score of the night.

Vidalia responded quickly on the next possession, finding rhythm in their run game to punch in their first touchdown. Their two-point conversion failed, leaving the Tigers ahead 8–6. Later in the second quarter, a few miscues in the passing game caused Swainsboro’s offense to stall, giving the Indians a chance to capitalize. Vidalia managed to sneak ahead 12–8 going into the locker room at halftime.

Whatever Coach Scott Roberts told his team at the break clearly worked. The Tigers came out in the second half looking like the Swainsboro squad fans have grown accustomed to seeing all season. They were physical, fast, and focused. Behind the legs of Kyle Johnson, Daveyhon Williams, and Marco Danford, the Tigers shifted gears and pounded away on the ground, scoring four unanswered touchdowns. Vidalia managed one late score, but by then, the damage was done. Swainsboro sealed a 35–20 win and stayed in the hunt for another deep playoff run.

With the win, the Swainsboro Tigers improve to 8–1 on the season, while the Vidalia Indians fall to 1–7.

After the game, Coach Roberts spoke about what made the difference. “Offensively, we made a couple of terrible mistakes that stopped two drives in the first half,” he said. “We took care of the football much better in the second half and were able to score every time we got it. Defensively, we played much better once we settled down.”

Roberts also praised this week’s Players of the Week, Maddox Robertson and Shannon Benjamin. “Maddox does a great job making calls and keeping our offensive linemen going in the right direction,” Roberts said. “Shannon has done a great job on both sides of the ball all year long.”

Now, with the regular season winding down, the Tigers’ attention shifts to their next challenge. They will travel to Savannah to face Savannah Christian Preparatory School. The two teams have some recent history, with last year’s matchup ending in a tough 48–12 loss for Swainsboro. That result still lingers, and the Tigers are eager for a chance at redemption.

Coach Roberts knows his team will need to be at their best. “They’re extremely disciplined and talented,” he said. “We’re going to have to take care of the football better than we have, limit big plays on defense, and be prepared to battle for however long it takes.”

The Tigers will make the trip down to Savannah for their final region matchup of the regular season, taking on the Raiders at Savannah Christian Preparatory School, located at 1599 Chatham Parkway, Savannah, GA 31408. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

As the postseason draws near, the message is clear across Tiger Nation: finish strong, stay focused, and keep believing. The road to the playoffs begins now.
