The Swainsboro Tigers and Toombs County Bulldogs renewed their rivalry Friday night at Tiger Field in a highly anticipated matchup between two programs separated by only about 30 miles. Swainsboro came out ready for the challenge, but a strong second half by the Bulldogs ultimately proved to be the difference in a 49-21 Toombs County victory.

Swainsboro received the opening kickoff and immediately tested the Bulldogs with a shot downfield. Toombs responded by forcing a quick three-and-out, but the Tigers’ Wrecking Crew defense answered with an aggressive opening series of its own, forcing the Bulldogs to punt.

On Swainsboro’s next possession, the Tigers began establishing their ground game behind strong offensive line play and the running of sophomore Kyle Johnson. A defensive pass interference penalty on a key third down extended the drive, and Johnson eventually finished it with a touchdown run to give Swainsboro the early lead.

The Tigers’ defense quickly added to the advantage. On Toombs County’s next possession, Swainsboro forced a fumble, and Jeffrey Davis scooped it up and took it to the end zone for the Tigers’ second touchdown of the night.

Toombs County eventually found its footing offensively and answered with a touchdown to cut Swainsboro’s lead to 14-7. Momentum shifted again on the ensuing kickoff when the Tigers muffed the return, giving the Bulldogs an opportunity they quickly turned into points early in the second quarter to tie the game at 14.

From there, the first half became a physical back-and-forth battle, with both defenses playing aggressively. Toombs County broke the tie with another touchdown before halftime, taking a 21-14 advantage into the locker room.

The second half belonged largely to the Bulldogs. Toombs County found more success moving the football and began pulling away, eventually building its lead to 49-14.

Swainsboro continued to battle and found the end zone once more late in the game when junior quarterback Joshua Gray connected with Shannon Benjamin for a touchdown, bringing the final score to 49-21.

Offensive lineman Callan Braswell was named Swainsboro’s Offensive Player of the Game, while linebacker Ja’Bios Smith earned Defensive Player of the Game honors for the Tigers.

Swainsboro will now turn its attention to its final non-region game as the Tigers travel to Blackshear to face Pierce County on Friday, Sept. 11. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
