The Swainsboro Middle School Tigers boys’ basketball team added another chapter to the program’s growing success story this season, capturing the conference championship for the second consecutive year. While last year’s title established the Tigers as contenders, this season’s performance confirmed their staying power, as the team handled the pressure of defending a championship and finished the job once again.
Head coach Liam Cushman noted that one of the biggest challenges this season was maintaining the hunger and focus that often becomes difficult after experiencing success.
“Once you win a championship, the expectations change,” Cushman said. “Our message to the team from day one was that last year’s title would not help us this season unless we were willing to put the work in again. The players embraced that mindset and came in ready to compete every single day.”
Throughout the season, the Tigers built their identity around defensive intensity and disciplined execution, consistently controlling the tempo of games and forcing opponents into difficult situations. That approach paid off in the postseason, where SMS relied on strong team defense and smart decision-making to advance through the playoff rounds and return to the championship stage.
“Our defense set the tone for us all year,” Cushman explained. “When we defend the right way, everything else begins to fall into place—our energy improves, our communication improves, and our confidence grows.”
In the championship matchup, the Tigers delivered one of their most complete performances of the season. Balanced scoring, physical rebounding, and consistent defensive pressure allowed SMS to take command of the game and secure the program’s second straight conference title. Rather than relying on one standout performance, the victory reflected a collective effort from the entire roster.
“What made this group special was their willingness to stay connected,” Cushman said. “Different players stepped up at different moments, and everyone understood that winning required contributions from the entire team.”
With another championship secured, the Tigers now turn their focus toward the future, knowing the foundation of the program continues to strengthen each season. Coach Cushman expressed appreciation for the support of assistant coaches, school leadership, parents, and fans who played an important role throughout the year.
For the eighth-grade players preparing to move on to the high school level, this season marks the closing of a memorable chapter—one defined by leadership, consistency, and a commitment to finishing what they started. Their efforts helped bring another championship banner to Swainsboro Middle School, reinforcing the expectation that the Tigers will continue to compete at the highest level for years to come.
