The Lady Dawgs softball program continues its tradition of developing collegiate talent, as Ronnee’ Swain-Russell recently signed to play at the next level. Russell becomes the 11th Lady Dawg in the past 12 years to continue her softball career after high school.

Russell, known by teammates and coaches as “Dot,” will trade the Bulldogs’ red and black for the blue and yellow of Fort Valley State University. The Wildcats compete at the NCAA Division II level as a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC).

A four-year starter behind the plate, Russell was one of just two seniors on the Bulldogs’ 2025 state runner-up team. Her leadership and defensive skills anchored a program that consistently competed at the highest level in Class A.

In softball, success often begins in the circle and behind the plate, and Russell excelled in both leadership and execution. She caught for two Class A Pitchers of the Year during her career—an achievement rarely seen at the classification level and a testament to her ability to manage a game defensively.

Russell earned all-region honors three times and was named Region Defensive Player of the Year in both 2024 and 2025. Her performance also drew statewide recognition, as she was selected as the Class A All-State catcher in 2025. She was chosen to participate in the prestigious Georgia Dugout Club Junior All-Star Game, played at Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves.

Russell leaves the Lady Dawgs program with an impressive résumé that includes four region championships, two state championships, and one state runner-up finish.

Head coach Frank Wimberly praised Russell not only for her accomplishments on the field, but also for her character and commitment.

“Dot is a high-character person who has always put her team first and will be remembered as one of the great Lady Dawgs,” Wimberly said. “She never missed a practice, loves ECI softball, and leaves the program better than she found it.”

Wimberly added, “I couldn’t be prouder of a player than I am of Dot. I know she will continue to overachieve in her next endeavor. Fort Valley State is getting a great player and an even better person.”

With her signing, Russell adds another chapter to the Lady Dawgs’ strong legacy—and begins an exciting new one at Fort Valley State.
