The air carried that familiar late November chill as the Swainsboro Lady Tigers stepped onto the field for their final region doubleheader against Washington County. It was the kind of night that felt like a transition, one chapter closing and another quietly beginning.
The JV squad set the tone early, playing with a confidence that could not be missed. Every pull, every route, every sprint carried the energy of a group that refused to leave anything undone. Their 19 to 0 shutout felt less like a surprise and more like a statement.
“Those girls have grown so much,” head coach Alexandria Walden said as she reflected on the win. “They have learned how to play together and how to trust each other. You could see that in the way they handled Washington County.”
Varsity’s night told a different story filled with grit but short on scoring. Washington County’s defense was steady from start to finish. Despite several promising drives, Swainsboro could not push across the points they needed and fell 19 to 0. The scoreboard did not show the fight the Lady Tigers put into every possession.
“Our girls battled,” Walden said. “They stayed composed. Even when things did not go our way, they kept responding. That effort matters as we step into the postseason.”
Now the postseason has arrived.
With the regular season behind them, the Lady Tigers enter the GHSA State Playoffs as the number 3 seed. Their path begins on December 4 with a trip to Monroe High School in Albany, where they will face Jordan High School in the first round.
There was no break during the holiday week. While many were gathered at home for Thanksgiving, the Lady Tigers were on the field practicing, conditioning, and sharpening the details that often decide playoff games.
“They did not complain once,” Walden said of the holiday practices. “They wanted to be there. They wanted to stay ready. That tells me everything about who they are and what they want to accomplish.”
Jordan brings speed and unpredictability, traits that can break open a game if left unchallenged. Walden acknowledges the difficulty but speaks with quiet confidence about her team.
“We know Jordan is athletic. We know they play fast. But we have prepared for that. If we stay disciplined and execute, we can control the pace. The girls understand what it will take.”
If Swainsboro wins, they will move on to face the winner of Monroe High versus Elbert County in the second round. For now, the Lady Tigers are focused entirely on one game: forty minutes against Jordan that could keep their season alive.
As they prepare for the trip to Albany, there is a sense of purpose in everything they do. A season filled with growth, lessons, and grit has brought them to this moment. Now, under the bright lights of the playoffs, they will have their chance to write the next part of their story.
