The Veterans at the Library held their weekly meeting at the Franklin Memorial Library Monday morning, September 28, at 9 a.m. With Chair Johnny Tapley presiding, they had 40 in attendance. Jacob Wedincamp provided an outstanding breakfast consisting of sausage biscuits, jelly, fresh bananas and sweet rolls. Shari Watt provided orange juice, grape juice, cranberry juice, apple juice, and coffee.
Chair Johnny introduced the speakers, Jansen Ware, Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services and Kristin Hall, Clerk of Superior Court. Ware and Hall talked about what ESPLOST is about. ESPLOST is a one cent sales tax in Emanuel County that is a continuation of investing in Emanuel County Schools and providing money for Facilities, Safety, Technology and Transportation. It’s a voter-approved 1% local sales and use tax that helps our public schools fund capital improvements. Unlike property taxes, ESPLOST is paid through qualifying purchases made in Emanuel County by residents and visitors alike. During the last five years under EPLOST, Emanuel County has collected $20 million, that's $365,000 per month or $4.38 million per year for our local schools. ESPLOST supports the whole student experience by providing safety, technology, transportation and facilities.
Veterans at the Library had one new Veteran attend, George I. Bady, who served in the United States Marine Corps. His highest rank was E-5.
Watt talked about the Wounded Warriors Banquet on October 8 at Beaver Creek. If you would like to purchase a ticket, you can see her at the library.
