The Veterans at the Library held their weekly meeting at the Franklin Memorial Library Monday morning, May 12, at 9 a.m. With Chair Johnny Tapley presiding, they had 46 in attendance. The DAR fed provided a great breakfast of sausage casserole, donuts, muffins, fresh fruit and Shari Watt furnished orange juice, cranberry juice, grape juice, apple juice and coffee. They had two new veterans attend the meeting, Gary Huiett, Jr. and Eddie E. Lewis. Huiett, Jr. served in the U.S. Army from December 1984 until December 1988. He was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, MS, Camp Racesy, and Fort Belvoir, VA. Huiett’s highest rank was E-3. Eddie E. Lewis served in the Georgia Army National Guard from 1960 through 1968. He was stationed in Swainsboro and was in Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson, SC. Lewis’ highest rank was Specialist 4. Chair Johnny updated on the "Veterans Cup Golf Tournament" that is scheduled for this Saturday, May 17, at the Swainsboro Country Club. There are still some openings for players making up 3-person teams. Daniels Chevrolet is sponsoring the "hole in one" prize of $10,000.00 for anyone having a hole in one during the tournament. There are plenty of door prizes including a grille, coolers, hats, shirts, golf towels, Vidalia onions, golf balls, cup coolers, plus the players will be fed breakfast at 7:15 a.m. and grilled chicken for lunch. The tournament will start at 8 a.m. with a 6-pounder cannon being fired by Sons of the American Revolution, Georgia Society, Wiregrass Chapter members Steve Burke and Dess Smith III. The winners of the Veterans Cup Golf Tournament will have their photo taken and put with an article in The Forest-Blade, plus their names will be added to the Veterans Cup Golf Tournament Trophy that stays in the Swainsboro Golf & Country Club on display.
