More than 40 children took to the court May 28-29 as the Swainsboro Tigers and Lady Tigers basketball programs joined forces to host their annual Black & Gold Fundamental Kids Camp Series at Swainsboro High School’s new gym, The Den, and the old gym.
The two-day camp welcomed boys and girls from Pre-K through fifth grade and focused on teaching the fundamentals of basketball in a fun, energetic, and encouraging environment. Campers worked on ball handling, shooting, free throws, defensive techniques, teamwork, and game competition while receiving instruction from Tiger and Lady Tiger coaches, players, and volunteers.
“Anytime we can get young kids excited about basketball and help them develop the fundamentals of the game, it’s a win for our program and our community,” said Swainsboro Tigers Head Coach Brice Hobbs. “We had great participation, great effort, and our players did an outstanding job serving as role models throughout the camp.”
Throughout the two days, participants rotated through skill stations, drills, contests, and team activities designed to build confidence and improve their understanding of the game. Current Swainsboro basketball players played an active role in mentoring campers and demonstrating skills throughout the event.
“The best part of camp was seeing the smiles, energy, and growth from our campers over the two days,” said Swainsboro Lady Tigers Head Coach Alexandria Walden. “We want every child who comes through our program to leave with more confidence, more knowledge of the game, and a love for basketball. We were thrilled with the turnout and support from our community.”
The camp concluded with several competitions and prize giveaways. Contest winners included Joshua Easterling, Knockout King (ages 8-11); Aaryan Hodges, Free Throw Champion (ages 8-9); Legend Williams, Free Throw Champion (ages 10-11); Candace Johnson, Hot Shot Queen (ages 5-7); and Mark “MJ” Walden, Free Throw Champion (ages 5-7).
The basketball programs also recognized several local businesses and community supporters who helped make the camp possible. Special thanks were extended to Mrs. Phyllis Strawbridge and Kiddie Campus Learning Center for donating the basketball goal that served as the grand prize for the Mini Camp Games. Additional support was provided by Chapman Funeral Home, Daniels Chevrolet, Red’s Auto Lube & Tire Shop, and Jesus Saves, which donated the snow cone machine used during Friday’s activities.
With more than 40 campers participating, the event once again showcased the commitment of both the Swainsboro Tigers and Lady Tigers basketball programs to developing young athletes and investing in the future of basketball in Emanuel County.
