The Emanuel County Historic Society is reminding everyone of the Country’s 250th anniversary this year with our Patriots’ Day celebration at the Longview Farm and Home Museum that sits across from the Jaycee Fairgrounds. The date is Saturday, October 17th from 10AM until 4PM. The Skunk Brigade will be there along with other Sons of the American Revolution, firing their cannons and demonstrating their knowledge of the years around the Revolution, as the photo shows. Emanuel County was not formed until 1812 and had no battles fought on our grounds during the Revolutionary War but we certainly appreciate that event and what it meant for our Country.
There will be an authentic blacksmith, a wood carver, a candle maker, corn shelling and grits making, and other crafts demonstrated. Those crafts people will have some things to sell. The children will enjoy milking a cow by hand, making butter with a hand churn, shelling corn, playing with period wooden toys, and other items. It should be fun for all and definitely entertaining when the Skunk Brigade fires their cannons.
No admission is charged. Only handicap parking will be inside our fence. A raffle will be held at 2 p.m. for a 22-inch Blackstone Griddle with $5 tickets sold only at the museum event. Our buildings will be open, and there are so many changes we’ve made this past year for you to see. Someone from George L. Smith II Park will be on hand to discuss his memorabilia we have. A representative of the Regional Libraries will be available to further discuss the effect the Revolution had in our area.
We hope you will come. For more information or if you have an old-timey craft like quilting or knitting to demonstrate, please call me (Missy Elder) at 478-763-3631.
