On Tuesday, September 29, Emanuel County residents are invited to do something simple: sit down together, share a meal, ask questions and work toward a brighter future for our animals.
The Emanuel County Humane Society will host a Public Animal Shelter Forum beginning at 6 p.m. at Sister Lou’s Country Buffet, 303 S. Coleman St. in Swainsboro.
Judge Bobby Reeves will serve as moderator for the evening, helping guide a conversation among representatives of the Humane Society, City and County government, law enforcement and the community.
But organizers hope the evening feels like much more than another public meeting.
It is an invitation to come eat with your neighbors, learn how our local animal shelter operates, hear answers to questions people have been asking and, most importantly, talk about what Emanuel County can accomplish when everyone comes to the same table.
More than 90 questions and concerns were collected from Humane Society discussions and community input. Those have been consolidated into 22 broader questions and provided to participating officials in advance, giving them time to research records, gather numbers and prepare accurate answers.
The complete question packet has also been made available publicly through the Emanuel County Humane Society Facebook page.
Topics include overcrowding, shelter funding and donations, rescue opportunities, fostering, spay and neuter programs, animal ordinances and enforcement, veterinary care, euthanasia, shelter outcomes and public transparency.
But organizers do not want the evening to end with a list of problems.
The conversation will also ask what Emanuel County can do next.
What can be changed now? What could realistically be accomplished within the next 90 days? What resources do we already have? Where can the City, County, Humane Society, law enforcement, rescues, businesses and ordinary citizens work together?
The public will also have an opportunity to submit additional questions and ideas.
And in true small-town fashion, the conversation will happen around the dinner table.
Sister Lou’s Country Buffet is opening especially for the event. Anyone who brings one needed item for the animal shelter will receive a free buffet meal.
Current shelter needs include dog food, stainless steel water buckets, raised dog beds, flea treatment, paper towels, trash bags, bleach and cleaner.
There is no admission charge.
Local businesses and residents have also been supporting the effort through the Humane Society’s Community With Heart campaign, demonstrating that helping Emanuel County’s animals does not always require a large donation. Sometimes it means donating a needed item, offering a resource, sharing an idea, volunteering or simply showing up.
That spirit is exactly what organizers hope to see on September 29.
You do not have to be an animal expert. You do not have to belong to the Humane Society. And you do not have to arrive with the solution.
Just come be part of it.
Come eat with your neighbors.
Come hear the answers.
Come share your ideas.
And let’s work together toward a brighter future for the animals of Emanuel County.
